We’ve been watching a show on Netflix called One Hundred Humans. The premise is to test 100 humans ages 20-60’s both male and female in different ways. It’s been an interesting show to watch with my young adult children as we are from different generations and love to discuss life.
We often find ourselves betting on which groups win the challenges set forth by the show’s producers and what comes of the results. One of the recent ones brought up a good topic for today which had to do with praise vs. criticism and how humans react to each of them.
I imagine you are already nodding that praise brought out more positive results than criticism. You guessed that because you’re in touch with your own feelings and you know that when you feel appreciated and praised, you work harder than when you’re demeaned and criticized. Right? Exactly.
But it brought up the topic for conversation in how people lose their impetus to live beyond expectations when they are treated poorly and made to feel less than others. The bar which measures success goes way down and failure can ensue. Does this make sense to you?
Humans are such complex people. Differences in personality, temperament and childhood have a lot to do with how people react to the extremes in criticism and praise. As a parent and mentor, I think it’s a learning curve of what works with each individual. We need the right mixture in order to inspire others to live beyond the expectations that they’ve had set in their minds. Live beyond the limitations and beliefs that they’ve held in order for them to expand out of the comfort zone and embrace the zone of JOY!
