Don’t Make Change Too Complicated

I know how it feels to want to change something in your life and to feel overwhelmed by the mounting work that you believe needs to be done in order to accomplish it. Sometimes we make excuses because the change feels like it’s too much at one time. Or we feel like it has to be done cold turkey or all at once.

But that’s not reality. Time and again, we see that change happens gradually, especially when it’s a big change that we’re choosing to make. It takes baby steps. But, we as humans want the change to come quickly – one and done – so that voilà – it is accomplished and we can move on to the next goal. Does this sound like you?

Or are you someone who, when feeling overwhelmed by making a change, puts it off? Today I have too much to do for me to start trying (name the change) so I’ll start tomorrow. Does that sound familiar? Or I need to get (whatever item, mindset, excuse) before I can begin, so I’ll wait until next week? I have to do this perfectly, so I will wait until I’m ready. I’m not ready. What if I fail? And so the loop goes on…

Does this sound like you? Here’s my advice which begins with a riddle.

How do you eat an elephant?

One small bite at a time.

I don’t eat elephants, but I like the riddle because elephants are huge and if you were told that you had to eat it, you might not know how you could do it. It would probably feel like a humungous task. But if you broke it down into little bite-sized pieces, you’d find your mindset changing and be successful!

That’s the way change happens when you break it down into simple steps. I can help you if you need someone to hold your hand and to guide you. Reach out! I’m here for you!
