In our lives, change is unavoidable, loss is unavoidable. In the adaptability and ease with which we experience change lies our happiness and freedom.
Buddha
Yes it’s another Buddha quote because I love the use of the term ‘adapting’ since it holds a less scarier version of the term change. Sometimes the word CHANGE can make people nervous as it feels too permanent, but ADAPTING somehow holds an easier definition, more of a connotation of smooth transition as opposed to change in some people’s minds.
I have often thought that we should foster adaptability in child raising. Perhaps it could be a class in school that teaches how to learn to go with the flow (obviously when it doesn’t affect your personal boundaries etc.) because during our lives we will experience loss and change. Our willingness to move beyond them, adapt to those new ‘normals’ and circumstances gives us a greater success rate in being happy and feeling free. Some losses feel devastating at the time, but actually can be for the better when we look back in hindsight. We grow, we learn and we expand our worlds through change.
Does the term adapt help you to change? Let’s take out our journals and write a bit about it. Let me know what you come up with through your free writing!
