I have said this phrase often the past few weeks to many people. “Play to your strengths” meaning do what you do well. I”ve said it in a few different situations, but each time the recipient has smiled and we’ve shared a laugh which I always find positive!
It’s not to say – don’t go learning new skills or stay in your comfort zone and don’t expand your horizons. No, not at all. I am a lifelong learner myself and love to share out of the box thinking!
It’s been used as an encourager to those who are hesitant to try something new. It’s been an offhand comment when a simple task can be done by someone while you’re doing something more complex or vice versa – it’s the compromise of delegation especially when you’re in a time crunch. It’s even been a joke between friends about my navigational skills! It’s not just a stay in your lane, but a reminder that you do it well and there’s time enough to change lanes whenever you feel ready!
Lately, I’m finding that the peace it gives us, the comfort, the ‘Yes, I can and do know that well’ feeling emerges even more helpful as we age and when we’re feeling uncertain. Especially when someone else can ‘see’ our strengths so clearly!
I’m not sure who this post is for, but if this resonates with you, then all the better! Play to your strengths! Take hold of your life! Enjoy the challenge and remember that it’s ok to do what you do best and delegate the rest! This is a fully involved experience so let’s play to your strengths with JOY!
