Hold My Hand

Sometimes I wake up with a song in my head and today was no exception. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the song, Hold My Hand, by Hootie & the Blowfish, but that was it. Hold my hand is something I have often said to clients, to friends and to family as a way of helping them through something because it feels like we are walking together through the situation. It also emphasizes that you’re not on your own when you’re holding hands.

Hold my hand has been a request from me when I’ve needed help as well. Back in 2001, I was diagnosed with breast cancer which obviously frightened me to my core as you can imagine. I was not the most courageous of women at the time and very wimpy when it came to pain, even though I’d had two c-sections when I had my children. It has been a long road, but one I am ever grateful to still be on. I’ve endured a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and more surgeries and complications than I can name. The fears that held me prisoner in the middle of the night were horrendous as I dealt with all that happens when one is told, You have cancer. But what helped me were the many friends, family and even strangers, who reached out to hold my hand; either figuratively or in real life. That’s what kept me going even when it felt too difficult.

The other day I wrote Connection Is The Key To Success so I feel it’s fitting to write about holding hands today. I am here for you. You are not alone. Just read some of Hootie’s lyrics below and you’ll understand.

Hold My Hand
by Hootie & the Blowfish
With a little love and some tenderness
We’ll walk upon the water
We’ll rise above the mess
With a little peace and some harmony
We’ll take the world together
We’ll take them by the hand
‘Cause I’ve got a hand for you, oh
‘Cause I wanna run with you
Yesterday, I saw you standing there
Your head was down, your eyes were red
No comb had touched your hair
I said, get up, and let me see you smile
We’ll take a walk together
Walk the road awhile, ’cause
‘Cause I’ve got a hand for you
I’ve got a hand for you
‘Cause I wanna run with you
Won’t you let me run with you, yeah
Want you to hold my hand
(Hold my hand)
I’ll take you to a place
Where you can be
(Hold my hand)
Anything you wanna be because
I wanna love you the best that
The best that I can
